It was released July 22, 2008 and promoted with a free concert in Bryant Park on July 18th.

On it's first day of release Breakout sold 110,000 copies, and 371,000 for the week. It was the second biggest sales week of the year for a female artist.
It debuted in Canada at #1, Miley's first number one in Canada.
On September 14th, 2008 it topped the Australian ARIA charts becoming her first #1 outside of North America.
